When suggesting Microneeding treatment to my clients, a lot of curiosity and questions arise. I hear you, putting needles into the skin may sound a little intimidating. Let's dive into the top 5 questions clients have when considering the microneedling procedure.

1) WHAT IS MICRONEEDLING AND WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
It is a safe, simple and effective skin rejuvenation treatment, that can correct and perfect the condition of the skin. The microneedling tool is applied to the skin to create a controlled injury, with minimal downtime. The procedure is carried out on the mapped-out parts of the skin, puncturing the epidermis by applying miniature fine sterile needles on the treated area.
This collagen induction therapy results in a beautifully enhanced skin appearance which patients can see instantly after the treatment. The regenerative process continues to stimulate the production of collagen through the wound healing cascade which releases various growth factors, for up to 12 weeks post-treatment. . The microtrauma in the epidermal layers created by the sterile needles causes cells to start the regenerative process, stimulating collagen production, which is invaluable for skin repair. It is clinically proven to treat acne scaring, clinically proven to reduce the depth of scars and normalise the skin structure.
Histological examinations of the treated skin showed up to 400% increase in collagen and elastin deposition in the epidermis, resulting in thicker healthier skin.
Here is a list of some of the conditions that are effectively treated with Microneedling:
Post-acne scares
Uneven skin texture
Fine lines and wrinkles
Stretch marks and surgical scars
Enlarged pores
Sun damage
As a skin booster before botox and filler treatments
Hair loss
Sun damage and dull complexion
Truly a miracle worker.

2) WHAT IS THE TREATMENT PROCESS?
Your aesthetic practitioner will analyse your skin and decide on the length of the needles to use. It usually varies between 0.5-2.5mm in depth.
The procedure then starts with a double cleanse using exfoliating cleansers. Skin is then degreased with sanitising solution and ready to be worked on.
A sterile microneedling device is applied on individually mapped out small areas of the skin in four directions to cover the entire area. No pressure is used to apply the device. This process is carried out on each treatment area until it is all treated. The skin is then cooled with a cold water compress to reduce the heating sensation.
It is followed by Dermalux LED phototherapy
An individually selected cocktail of serums is usually applied to the skin, followed by finishing skincare products and SPF.
A course of 3-8 treatments is needed to achieve the ultimate results. The number of treatments will depend on the concerns and condition of the skin.
3) IS MICRONEEDLING PAINFUL?
Most patients find microneedling well-tolerated and quick with minimal downtime. It takes 15-20 minutes to cover the entire face and neck. Depending on the length of the needles used and areas of work you might feel more or less a heat sensation. The strong heat sensation goes down within 2 h post-treatment and redness normally goes down within 2-3 days after the treatment.
4) WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTER THE MICRONEEDLING TREATMENT?
The skin will feel quite hot immediately after the procedure. It might look quite red and inflamed. That is your inflammatory process that initially kickstarts the stimulation of the skin cells which will eventually result in rejuvenation and collagen production. It is important to follow the aftercare advice and avoid direct sun exposure and active skincare ingredients 48H after the treatment to avoid irritation. If you use prescription retinols, avoid them for a week. Use microneedling-safe serums only.

5) WHEN WILL I SEE THE RESULTS?
You will see the plumping of the skin immediately after the treatment, the skin continues the work on rejuvenation and production of fresh collagen throughout the next 12 weeks post-treatment.
Usually, it takes between 3 to 8 microneedling treatments to achieve desired results. the number of sessions will depend on the condition of the skin.
